Versatile Vinegar

Vinegar kinda stinks.

Generally, I’m a fan of all things that smell pretty. Hand soaps, lotions and even cleaning products. The Method line is one of my favorites. However, cleaning safely and naturally doesn’t always mean buying expensive products. One of my favorite cleaners is simple white vinegar.

Vinegar is often described as one of the oldest remedies because Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used vinegar to treat his patients. It is a naturally occurring antiseptic that was accidentally discovered in a cask of wine that had gone bad. Today’s vinegar contains about 4% acidity, and this is responsible for it’s cleaning ability. From window to floors, it packs a powerful cleaning punch along with its signature pungent odor. I have had some success adding essential oils to my vinegar to soften the smell: orange, lemon, lavender and peppermint are some of my favorites.

Here are a few of my favorite uses for vinegar:

Window Cleaner or Countertop Cleaner

  • One part water
  • One part distilled white vinegar

Toilet Bowl Cleaner

  • 3 cups distilled white vinegar directly into the toilet bowl
  • Allow it to sit for 5 minutes, then scrub
  • Flush after 1 hour

Dishwasher Cleaner

  • One cup of distilled white vinegar directly into the bottom of your dishwasher prior to running it. This not only cleans your dishwasher, but leaves your glasses clear and sparkly.

Drain Cleaner and Deodorizer

  • 1 cup baking soda directly into the drain followed by 1 cup boiling vinegar
  • Allow it to sit for 15 minutes then rinse with cool water

Do you use vinegar as a cleaner? Do you have any tips you can share with me?

  1. LOVE vinegar!! It’s a normal procedure to add to my dishwasher. For carpet spot cleaner:
    1 part vinegar
    1 part ammonia
    2 part water

And I use vinegar in my hot tub! It’s a natural ingredient that you can trust!!
