Buying natural beauty products is good for you. And usually, it’s good for the Earth, too.
But, what do you do or buy if you don’t have access to a specialty store? What if the drug store is your source for make up and personal care products?
Fret not, natural beauty. You can still pick better for you brands out of the aisles of make up, shampoo and lotions at your local CVS.
Rather than picking out specific products, I want to tell you about the brands I look for at big box retailers. This is important because brands have “brand promises” which outline their commitment to the consumer. It’s usually where a brand will tell you if they’re cruelty free or if they choose sustainable ingredients. Checking out a company’s brand promise or mission is one of the easiest way to pick products that you can feel good about buying and using.
4 Natural Beauty Drug Store Buys:
1. Burt’s Bees:
Most of you have probably heard of or used Burt’s Bees before. This product has grown an insane amount since I was first introduced to it in 2003. My college room mate brought me a Burt’s Bees sampler for Christmas. From that point forward I was hooked on their lip balm. I also LOVE the milk and honey body lotion. It smells like heaven.
Pro Tip: you’ll get the least offensive ingredients list if you pick from the baby line. Theses products are fragrance free and very gentle.
2. Alba Botanica
Alba Botanica is another brand that hooked with me with their lip balm (specifically the magical coconut one). I moved from lip balm to their skin care line to their shampoos and I haven’t once been disappointed. Alba products smell amazing; like a tropical beach vacation. Last winter I purchased the Very Emollient fragrance free lotion for my grandmother and she loves it. It has worked better for her skin than anything she’s used in 70+ years.
Pro Tip: the coconut cream lip balm is amazing. Buy it. Try it. And thank me later.
Pacifica is my go to for fragranced body washes and sprays. Let’s face it, most of us like to smell good. But, commercial perfumes can be a little intense and they’re very heavy on the chemicals. Pacifica offers body washes, lotions and perfumes that are made with better ingredients and that smell incredible. They recently expanded to offer make up; the tinted lip balm offer the perfect mix of moisture and color.
Pro tip: Leave a bar of Pacifica Soap in your bathroom or shower for a natural air freshener. My favorites are the Hawaiian Ruby Guava and Indian Coconut Nectar.
4. Shea Moisture
The first shea butter based shampoo did interesting things to my hair and didn’t lather at all. Going from conventional shampoo to a lather free shampoo can feel weird and I was unsure about whether I could keep using it. But I kept it up and I eventually realized that I didn’t actually need all that lather to have clean soft hair. I love shea butter as a moisturizer but I love it even more as shampoo. Shea Moisture has a clean line of soaps, lotions, shampoos, conditions and body oils that are changing the beauty industry.
Pro tip: If you have troubled skin, use the African Black Soap. It will draw out impurities and over time, you’ll have clearer skin that you would have every imagined.
